This term I have been TAing for a first year class that is quite rough around the edges (a newer course offering). While I have been enjoying holding tutorials, I'm finding this class to be quite consumptive compared to all of the other classes I've TAed. Essentially I've had to find ways to teach and guide my tutorial sessions, with groups of students who largely don't read the textbooks. So I've been having to find ways to disseminate the course work into materials they can apply to their own lives and in ways that are more helpful than me dictating to them all the time. This means I've had to spend a lot of prep time. Even one of our texts is way too advanced for a first year course so this makes it more difficult. So whats the point of this post? The experience has been great and getting involved with some pedagogical work is making me want to be more involved in designing and teaching courses (I have two ideas for some undergrad classes I'd like to teach actually). The biggest problem is that this takes up so much of my time - my motivation to actually do my transcription or work on the paper, dwindles certain days. Oh well only 3 weeks left!
